Bunions are one of the most common problems you can have in your feet. They can cause pain and change the shape of your feet. They typically occur at the base of the big toe and are caused by incorrect foot mechanics; mainly, when the foot is too flat and thus forces the toe to move beyond its normal range. They can also be causes by arthritis. If you have a genetic predisposition to developing bunions, wearing shoes with high heels or that do not fit properly can cause problems.
There are two types of bunions, positional and severe. Positional bunions arise from the growth of new bone. This causes the joints to enlarge, and stretches the joint's outer covering. The big toe ends up pushed onto the smaller ones. The inside tendons tighten and pull the big toe out of alignment. Structural bunions are caused by the joint shifting position. When the angle between the bones of the first and second toes are greater than normal, the big toe starts to slant. Sometimes, the big toe also causes nearby toes to buckle. They often result in a bump of bone forming on the side of the toe.
Bunions can be treated with orthoses, or custom-made shoe inserts, if they are not severe. Changing shoes may also help with the problem. However, if your bunions are severe, you may need surgery. Surgery may be performed to remove extra bone, tightening the ligaments, and realigning the tendons on the inside of the toe. After surgery, it may take several months to heal.
