The rotator cuff is a powerful set of muscles in the shoulder. It is the center of your shoulder's range of motion - without it, you wouldn't be able to throw, reach, pull, or push. Overuse and age can cause these muscles to be easily injured, but they can heal.
The rotator cuff is complex, and as a result, can be injured in many ways. It can be irritated due to overuse, if you frequently do such things as pitch, carry luggage, or golf. Tendons in the joint can get pinched, causing pain. Or calcium deposits can form on the joint. Finally, tissues in the joint may get torn. Your doctor can diagnose the condition by testing your movements in the office and by taking x-ray images.
Treatments for these injuries include rest, ice and heat, medications, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and injections. You can also use physical therapy exercises to help regain range of motion and to restore your strength and flexibility. If none of these work, you may have surgery. After treatment, it's important to stay smart to prevent any additonal injury. Always stretch before playing sports, and talk to your coach or trainer about how to move properly to avoid further injuries.
