The shoulder is an important joint. It's involved in many of your daily activities. However, this can cause the joint to become very worn and arthritic. It can also be worn down by injury or chronic illness like rheumatoid arthritis. If your shoulder pain is not relieved by heat, ice, physical therapy, and medication, replacement surgery may be an option for you.
Shoulder replacement surgery will remove your natural joint and replace it with a prosthesis, or artificial joint. They are made of smooth metal or plastic and will replace the worn and rough parts of the shoulder. Chances are very good that this will relieve the pain in your shoulder and help you regain your strength and range of motion.
After your surgery, you can return to work gradually. You will have sessions with a physical therapist to help you learn to use your new joint. Your surgeon and therapist will help you monitor your progress and regain your independence. Within a few months you should be able to return to your normal activities.
