Trigger finger, or tenosynovitis, is an inflammation of the tissue inside your finger or thumb. Both the tendons themselves as well as the sheath that surrounds them become inflamed. As a result, straightening the finger is difficult or impossible.
Generally, this problem is caused by repeated use of a tool like a drill or wrench. It can be caused by arthritis as well. It usually starts with pain at the base of the finger, and may swell as well. The finger may also catch when you try to release it. A simple examnination usually diagnoses the condition.
Treatments for trigger finger include rest and oral medications. If that doesn't work, the doctor may give you a cortisone shot in the finger. If this fails, surgery is an option. The surgery is simple and can be done under local anesthesia. The doctor will open up the sheath around your swollen tendon, which causes you to be able to release the finger again. You should be able to return to normall activities shortly after the surgery.
