McLean County Orthopedics offers our state-of-the-art Imaging System with spacious wide open surroundings in our “Open” MRI technology. Our open MRI machine has a larger opening compared to a standard MRI machine. People who get nervous in small places may feel better using our open MRI machine.

MRI Definition:
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), is a noninvasive medical test to help physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. MRI provides different information about structures in the body which can’t be seen with a typical X-ray. MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues within your body.

Most MRI machines are large magnets. When you lie inside an MRI machine, the magnetic field temporarily realigns hydrogen atoms in your body. Radio waves cause these aligned atoms to produce very faint signals, which are used to create cross-sectional MRI images — like slices in a loaf of bread.

What to Expect During an MRI

During your MRI scan, you will lie on your back on a table that is part of the MRI scanner. The table will then slide into the space that contains the magnet.

Inside the scanner, you will hear a fan and feel air moving. You may also hear tapping or snapping noises as the MRI scans are done. It is critical to stay completely still while the scan is being done.
